Someone searches for brief and finds nothing, although the site contains an article titled creative outline. Is the problem missing content or a mismatch in language? That distinction is where I start reviewing unsuccessful searches.

Consider three explanations

The material may genuinely be absent. It may exist under different wording. Or the search system may not include the relevant field or language version. Commissioning a new article for all three situations can create avoidable duplication.

I first look manually through navigation, topic pages and existing articles. If the answer exists, the title, summary, labels or search coverage may need attention. If not, the need can be considered in editorial planning.

Recognise the reader’s vocabulary

Visitors need not know the organisation’s preferred terminology. They may use abbreviations, everyday expressions, spelling variations or Turkish words without diacritics. I examine what the system can reasonably accommodate instead of treating each variation as a poor query.

Language boundaries matter too. An English result in a Turkish search can sometimes help and sometimes confuse. That behaviour should be designed deliberately rather than emerge by accident.

Collect only useful evidence

People can enter personal information into a search field. Analysing search does not require keeping every raw query indefinitely. Access, retention and removing unnecessary personal detail belong within the product’s data approach.

I prefer grouped topic patterns for decisions. Repeated difficulty finding the same concept tells us more than one isolated query. A small sample should not become a sweeping claim about demand.

The empty state is also content

Beyond no results, offer useful options such as revising the wording, trying a broader term or visiting a topic archive. Unrelated popular articles should not be presented as though they answered the query.

Reading search findings alongside the content inventory helps identify the right task: write something new, improve an existing page or fix search behaviour. The same empty screen can conceal three different problems.
