Brand strategy

I connect what a brand says, who it matters to and the evidence supporting its promise. Positioning, messaging architecture and voice form a shared starting point for websites, social content and campaigns.

The questions I start with

What need is the audience trying to answer? Does the brand’s language match the product experience? Can the team explain the same promise consistently? Developing another slogan before answering these questions can simply give the original uncertainty a new appearance.

I review the website, existing content, product information and available research together. Verified information stays separate from assumptions so a preference does not gradually become an unsupported claim.

Elements of the approach

  • Positioning: Priority audience, need, alternatives and a supportable promise.
  • Messaging: A central idea, supporting messages and concrete evidence.
  • Voice: Actual headlines, buttons and explanations rather than adjectives alone.
  • Channel alignment: Different depths of the same idea across web, social and campaigns.

How the work becomes practical

I first identify what is clear and what remains unresolved in the current communication. Decisions are then collected in a working document. Testing them against three different pieces of content can reveal more than approving a presentation in isolation.

Depending on scope, the output may be a positioning document, message table, voice guide or creative brief. These are distinct tools. The work should address the actual need rather than produce every possible document automatically.

What makes the result useful?

Can a new team member use the guidance to make a consistent decision? Does a product change make it clear which messages need revision? Does the promise have a counterpart in the real experience? Those questions help evaluate strategy beyond an impressive line of copy.

The Porland archive records work connecting content and e-commerce communication. The guides below develop the questions behind positioning, messaging and voice. A project introduction can begin with the current brand, the change you want to make and the decision that is proving difficult.
